BELGRADE, Serbia – Jay Aiello (97 kg) will wrestle for a bronze medal tomorrow at the 2021 U23 World Championships. Jake Marsh (79 kg) was also officially pulled into tomorrow’s repechage round during Friday’s men’s freestyle semifinal round.
Aiello advanced to the semifinals after an impressive performance in the morning session. The University of Virginia standout first knocked off two-time Junior bronze medalist Feyzullah Akturk of Turkey before defeating Russia’s Shamil Ghadzhialiev in an entertaining 3-3 quarterfinal bout.
In the semifinals, Aiello dropped a 9-0 match to Iran’s Amirali Azarpira. Aiello wrestled a full six minutes and kept the match close, but Azarpira tacked on multiple late takedowns to secure the win.
In tomorrow night’s bronze medal match, Aiello will wrestle the winner of Vasil Pauliuchenka (Belarus) and Zuriko Urtashvili (Georgia), a match that will take place in tomorrow morning’s repechage round.
Aiello is a three-time NCAA qualifier for Virginia. He won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship at 197 pounds in 2020.
Marsh, who dropped his first match to Turkey’s Ramazan Sari, was pulled back into the tournament when Sari advanced to the 79 kg finals. The New Jersey RTC athlete will wrestle in tomorrow morning’s repechage round against Georgia’s Goga Mamiauri, who took fifth at the 2021 U23 Senior European Championships earlier this year.
The Group One men's freestyle medal round starts tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. local time, which is five hours ahead of U.S. eastern time.
The second group of men’s freestyle wrestling begins competition tomorrow. Chris Cannon (61 kg), Peyton Robb (74 kg), Myles Wilson (86 kg), Nino Bonaccorsi (92 kg) and Anthony Cassioppi (125 kg) will all take the mat for Team USA. The preliminaries for Group Two begin at 10:30 a.m. local time.
All matches can be watched live on FloWrestling.
