BELGRADE, Serbia – Emily Shilson advanced through her semifinals match via forefit and will wrestle in tomorrow night’s U23 World Championships finals at 50 kg. At 76 kg, Kylie Welker is set to wrestle for bronze tomorrow, while Alyvia Fiske (68 kg) was officially pulled into tomorrow’s repechage.
In the 50 kg semifinals against Tunisia’s Sarra Hamdi, Shilson was declared the winner after Hamdi, Tunisia’s representative at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, did not show up to the mat.
In tomorrow’s finals, Shilson will wrestle Shivani Pawar of India, who pinned Russia’s Mariia Tiumerekova in her finals match. Pawar has limited international results, but did compete for India in the 2018 Junior World Championships.
Shilson is looking for her second age-group World title of the year. She was the winner at 50 kg at the Junior World Championships. This would be Shilson’s third age-group World title (2018 Cadet World champion).
Welker dropped her semifinal match to Kyrgystan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy, 8-0. Medet Kyzy won a bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships in Oslo in October. Welker will await the results of tomorrow morning’s repechage matches to learn her opponent for the bronze medal bout tomorrow night.
Welker will be wrestling for her third career age-group World medal (2021 Junior World gold, 2019 Cadet World bronze).
Fiske was pulled into tomorrow’s repechage when France’s Koumba Larroque won her semifinal bout, 3-0, against her opponent from Ukraine. Fiske will wrestle India’s Monika tomorrow morning.
Alex Hedrick (55 kg) was officially eliminated from the tournament when India’s Anju lost her semifinal match to her Russian opponent. Hedrick needed Anju to make the finals in order to be pulled into tomorrow’s repechage.
Tomorrow’s repechage round begins at 10:30 a.m. local time, which is five hours ahead of U.S. eastern time. The finals session will begin at 6:00 p.m. local time.
All matches can be streamed live on FloWrestling.
