BELGRADE, Serbia – Taylor Lamont officially finished fifth at 55 kg at the 2021 U23 World Championships, as the first group of Greco-Roman medal matches wrapped up Tuesday night. Three other U.S. Greco athletes – Dylan Gregerson (60 kg), Nate Moore (72 kg) and Nicholas Boykin (97 kg) were pulled into Wednesday’s repechage.

In Tuesday’s finals session, Lamont, an eight-time age group World team member, was defeated by Nihad Guluzade of Azerbaijan, 9-0. Guluzade took advantage of a passivity call against Lamont and used a strong gut wrench to turn him twice. Another takedown and turn finished up the win, giving the bronze medal to Guluzade.

In the first set of Greco-Roman finals, Russia led the way with two individual champions. Iran had one individual champion and narrowly leads Russia in the team race.

In the session prior to the finals, three U.S. Greco-Roman athletes were pulled back into the tournament after the Group Two semifinals.

Gregerson (60kg), Moore (72 kg) and Boykin (97 kg) all earned spots into tomorrow morning’s repechage round after opponents who beat them advanced into the Greco-Roman finals. All three will have the chance to wrestle back for a bronze medal.

Gregerson will wrestle Mukhammadkodir Yusupov of Uzbekistan. Moore will face Erik Persson of Sweden while Boykin has Ondrej Dadak of the Czech Republic.

Tomorrow’s Greco-Roman repechage round begins at 10:30 a.m. local time, which is five hours ahead of U.S. eastern time. The women’s freestyle competition also begins at 10:30 a.m. All matches can be watched live on FloWrestling.
