Georgia wins Greco-Roman team title, Ukraine finishes second, Russia third, as Cadet World Championships draw to a close

Budapest, Hungary – The Cadet World Championships officially concluded this evening with the second-half of the Greco-Roman finals. Team USA, who finished ninth overall, did not have any wrestlers remaining on the last day of competition. Yesterday, Cory Land earned silver for the Red, White and Blue at 55 kg, while Otto Black (48 kg) and Jim Mullen (110 kg) finished in fifth place.

Georgia brought home the team title with 141 points, finishing 14 points ahead of runner-up Ukraine, who edged out the third-place Russian team by only three points.

Georgia crowned two champions, Luka Javakhadze at 48 kg and Achiko Bolkvadze at 80 kg. They finished with five medalists overall, including one silver and two bronzes, as well as three fifth-place finishers.

Ukraine brought home five medalists including World champions Nikita Dementiev (45 kg) and Imed Khudzhadze (65 kg), two silver medalists and one bronze medalist. However, they only had one wrestler finish in fifth place.

Russia matched Georgia and Ukraine with two champions, Valerii Mangutov (55 kg) and Daniil Chasovnikov (110 kg). However, they only earned four total medalists, picking up two bronzes and two fifth-place finishes.

Fourth-place Kyrgyzstan finished with 87 points. They also had two wrestlers win gold, Nuristan Suiorkulov at 51 kg and Razzak Beishekeev at 60 kg. Additionally, one wrestler earned bronze and another finished fifth.

The only two gold medalists to come from teams finishing outside the top four were Moldova’s Alexandru Solovei (71 kg) and Abubakar Khaslakhanau (92 kg) of Belarus. They were both the sole wrestler from their respective country to make a medal match. Moldova finished in 12th, while Belarus finished 14th.

The Junior World Championships kick off in less than a month, beginning on August 16th and running through August 22 in Ufa, Russia.
