Chey Bowman (La Habra, Calif./King University) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on January 10, 2023.

Bowman had a perfect 3-0 record, competing at both 170 pounds and 191 pounds, helping lead King University to the NCAA women’s team title at the 2023 USMC/NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Ky., January 6-7.

Bowman, who is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA women’s national rankings at 171 pounds, won her first two matches of the event by technical fall, defeating Jewell Gonzalez of Gannon, 10-0, then stopping Alexandra Castillo of McKendree, 10-0. King won both of those dual meets, putting the No. 1 seed King into the finals dual against No. 2 North Central.

In the finals dual, King led 20-15 heading into the 170-pound bout. King coach Jason Moorman chose to forfeit the 170-pound match to No. 1 ranked Yelena Makoyed of North Central, which tied the dual meet at 20-20.

Bowman moved up to 191 pounds, where she faced Trae Haynes of North Central, who is No. 5 ranked at 191 pounds. Bowman scored a four-point takedown in the second period, the key move in her 5-1 victory over Haynes. King won the dual meet 23-21, for its second straight NWCA NCAA women’s National Duals title.

Bowman was a 2022 NCWWC All-American for King, placing fifth at the national tournament. She won three California CIF state titles for Rowland High School.
