Austin Gomez (Carol Stream, Ill./University of Wisconsin) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on November 28, 2022.

Gomez won his 149-pound match at the NWCA All-Star Classic over Sammy Sasso on November 22 in Austin, Texas by a tight 10-9 score. Gomez fell behind, but rallied with four takedowns in the third period, including three within 25 seconds, to defeat Sasso.

A week earlier, he defeated three-time NCAA champion Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell in a dual meet in Ithaca, N.Y.

Gomez placed fourth in the 2022 NCAA Championships for Wisconsin. He previously competed for Iowa State, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2021. He is working on his master’s degree now.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Director of Communications Gary Abbott at gabbott@usawrestling.org.
