LOUISVILLE, Ky.— The men’s freestyle semifinals are set following the first session of action at the 2025 Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky.
Of the four past age-group World Champions to enter the tournament, two remain alive on the championship side – Bo Bassett at 65 kg and David Carr at 74 kg.
Carr, a two-time age-group World medalist and U.S. Open runner-up, opened with a 13-3 technical fall over Ed Scott. Two-time age-group World medalist Bassett pulled off a 1-0 decision over 2021 U20 World bronze medalist Beau Bartlett in the quarterfinals.
It’s a matchup between two Hokies as U20 World Bronze medalist Bryce Andonian is set to take on Caleb Henson in the 70 kg semifinals. Andonian defeated 2017 U17 World champion Will Lewan, 8-3, while Henson’s last-second takedown against two-time Senior World medalist James Green led him to a 5-5 win on criteria.
At 65 kg, U20 World silver medalist Jesse Mendez opened his tournament with a 4-1 decision over two-time age-group World medalist Marcus Blaze. Mendez is set to face Real Woods in the semifinals.
In a high-scoring quarterfinal on the other side of 65 kg, No. 2 seed and U23 World bronze medalist Brock Hardy knocked off 2022 Senior World Team member Seth Gross, 19-16. Hardy will face Bassett in the semifinals.
No. 2 seed Jonathan Aiello advanced to the semifinals with an 11-3 decision over Ethan Laird in the quarterfinals at 96 kg. Aiello matches up against U20 World bronze medalist Justin Rademacher in the next session.
Two-time Olympic medalist Kyle Dake meets Parker Keckeisen in the semifinals at 86 kg. Keckeisen used a 5-2 decision to get past Marcus Coleman in the only 86 kg match of the first session. On the other side, it’s a matchup between Chance Marsteller and Carter Starocci in the semifinals.
Eleven wrestlers received first-round byes and did not compete in the first session, including 2022 Senior World Team member Hayden Zillmer at 97 kg.
Entering the first session, nine U.S. Open runners-up were entered in the tournament, aiming to secure a Final X spot. Of the nine, seven are still in contention on the championship side – Mendez at 65 kg, Carr at 74 kg, Dean Hamiti at 79 kg, Dake at 86 kg, Aeoden Sinclair at 92 kg, Aiello at 97 kg, and Demetrius Thomas at 125 kg.
The Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament continues this afternoon with the semifinals at 4 p.m. (ET). The men’s freestyle finals will begin at Noon (ET) on Saturday, May 17.
