Pennsylvania Blue, Michigan Red, Wisconsin, Ohio Gray win preliminary pools in freestyle at Junior Women’s National Duals

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The 2025 Women’s National Duals kicked off on Thursday at the Grand Park Event Center. In Junior women’s freestyle, Pennsylvania Blue (Pool A), Michigan Red (Pool B), Wisconsin (Pool C) and Ohio Gray (Pool D) won their preliminary pools.
Pennsylvania Blue edged out Colorado in a tightly contested win, 39-37. Both teams won eight matches each, including four falls apiece. Securing pins for Pennsylvania Blue was Josephine Dollman (140), MacKenna Atkinson (207), Brenda Banks (235) and Samiyah Rahming (115). Colorado claimed wins by fall from Matilda Hruby (155), Shayla Martinez (190), Katey Valdez (100) and Amelia Bacon (125).
Four of Pennsylvania Blue’s victories were by technical fall, while Colorado earned three technical falls and one decision. Both teams advanced to the Gold/Silver pool.
Michigan Red topped California Red to win the championship dual in Pool B, 47-31. After just five matches, Michigan Red gained a strong 23-1 lead that included victories from Alexis Lazar (140), Belicia Manuel (145), Margaret Buurma (155), Kaili Manuel (170) and Maddie Hayden (190).
The four matches following were won by California Red, narrowing the gap to 24-20. Two-time 16U Nationals finalist Madison Nieuwenhuis put five points on the board for Michigan Red at 105 with a fall in 56 seconds. Me’kala James, a 2024 16U Nationals champion, secured a technical fall at 125 pounds for California Red, hoping to close the gap. The final two matches were won by Faith Burgess (130) and Isabella Cepak (135) as Michigan Red advanced to the Gold/Silver pool.
The championship dual in Pool C came down to the wire as Wisconsin’s Carley Ceshker (135) secured a vital fall at 44 seconds to push her team ahead of Missouri Blue, 38-37. Including the pin from Ceshker, Wisconsin scored five falls in the dual from Riley Hanrahan (145), Kimura Segerson-Hutter (190), Brooke Huffman (207), Emjay Neumann (120) and Madilyn Peach (125).
Ohio Gray defeated Illinois to win Pool D, 47-26. Ohio Gray advanced to the Gold/Silver pool behind seven pins from Reagan Knapp (145), Lori Grimes (155), Maddie Miller (207), Mackenzie Carder (120), Lacie Knick (125), Kira Cole (130) and Abigail Mozden (135).
The top two teams in each pool advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, which will determine the top eight teams in the tournament. Colorado, Missouri Blue and Illinois advanced as runners-up in their preliminary pools. Pool B had a true second place dual, as California Red defeated Idaho, 43-33 to advance.
Color pool competition continues on Friday morning at 9 a.m. in Westfield, Indiana. The championship finals and placement matches are set for 2 p.m. The competition concludes with Greco-Roman action on Saturday.
