Pennsylvania Blue dominates Ohio Gray, 59-12 to win 14U Freestyle National Duals title
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
OAKS, Pa. – Host Pennsylvania Blue was on a mission. If they were able to beat Ohio Gray in the finals of the 14U National Freestyle Duals on Saturday, it would be a historic feat.
The 14U National Duals have been hosted in Pennsylvania for three straight years. In 2023 and 2024, Pennsylvania swept the freestyle and Greco-Roman team titles at this event. Earlier this week, Pennsylvania won the Greco-Roman team title. A victory today would give Pennsylvania a double team title for three straight years, all on their home mats.
Pennsylvania Blue not only achieved its goal, but it gave fans a memorable performance on the way to an astonishing 59-12 win over a tough Ohio squad.
The boys from the Keystone State won the first 12 matches in the match, and ended up winning 15 of the 17 matches contested. The victories were mostly lopsided, with 10 technical falls and a pin. The pin came in the last match of the dual meet, when Grayden Paris got a fall at 80 pounds in 1:45.
Rather than type in every Pennsylvania athlete who won, we ask that you refer to the dual meet summary below. This team has so much to be proud about, not just its dominant finals victory, but also all of the seven victories it had over two days. All of the score were lopsided, with the closest match being a 19-point win over Michigan Blue.
California rallied for a 45-29 win in the third place match over a tough Wisconsin squad. California won seven of the last night matches in the dual meet, with pins by Xander Fronhofer (126) and Andrew Anderson (225). California finished with a 6-3 record in the tournament, but rallied to win a true-second bout on Friday, then overcame two loss in their Gold/Silver Pool B action, but still won their third-place battle.
Michigan Blue was powerful in its 46-30 win over Illinois for fifth place. Early in the match, Michigan Blue won seven matches in a row, but Illinois rebounded with five straight wins to close the gap. Michigan Blue won the final four matches, including technical falls by Brendan Kero (175) and Treyton Werth (225) to get the win.
Colorado finished strong with a 40-31 win over Oklahoma Red to finish seventh. Colorado won the last five matches of the dual meet, with Stetson Gable (155) getting a technical fall, then four straight wins by his teammates by decision.
Competition also completed in the Bronze/Copper pool, the Red/Blue pool, the Yellow/Green Pool, the Purple Pool and the Teal Pool.
Note: The 14U Freestyle All-Tournament Team will be announced on Sunday.
