HERRIMAN, Utah – An electric first day of men’s freestyle competition at the 16U National Duals saw Ohio (Pool A), Wisconsin (Pool B), Iowa Blue (Pool C) and Pennsylvania Blue (Pool D) each winning its respective group.

40 teams began the day in one of four preliminary pools, structured as traditional straight-line brackets. The top two teams from each preliminary pool advanced to the Gold/Silver bracket where they are guaranteed a top-eight finish and remain in contention for the first-place prize.

No. 1 overall seed Ohio looked every bit as advertised. It brought home the Pool A title with three dominant dual meet wins on Friday at Zions Bank Real Academy. The Buckeye State crew went 54-16 over Florida, 61-11 over Kansas and 45-27 over pool runner-up Minnesota Blue. Kyler Crooks and Braylon Wright picked up critical pins in the pool championship dual for Ohio.

Wisconsin upended No. 2 seed Illinois 41-35 in the Pool B championship dual. Lightweights Mason Moody and Lincoln Swick anchored the Wisconsin lineup with big time wins to seal the pool title. Carter Melichar added a 59-second pin for the Wisconsin squad at 157 pounds against Illinois.

No. 3 seed Indiana Gold was unable to complete the comeback in a 37-36 loss to Iowa Blue in the Pool C finals. Iowa Blue built its lead with six bonus-point victories throughout the championship dual.

No. 4 seed Pennsylvania Blue, who won the Greco-Roman title yesterday, might be the team to beat based on preliminary pool results. The Keystone State wrestlers took 15-of-17 matches from Oklahoma Outlaws Blue in the Pool D title match. Five Pennsylvania athletes earned pins in the dual— Mateo Gallegos, Jason Dube, Sam Harrington, Mason Chamberlain and Arav Pandey.

One round of the Gold/Silver bracket was wrestled on Friday evening. Teams starting with a 1-0 record in the Gold/Silver bracket and an inside track to the national title are Ohio, Pennsylvania Blue, Wisconsin and Iowa Blue.

The 16U National Duals is streaming live and on-demand at FloWrestling.com. Multiple subscription options are available to watch. Updated brackets and match-by-match results are available at USA Bracketing.

The men’s freestyle tournament continues Saturday at 8:30 a.m. (MT) with the remaining color pool duals. A complete schedule of events for this weekend’s tournament in Utah is available at usawrestlingevents.com.
