Illinois, Michigan Blue, Pennsylvania Blue, Wisconsin win their pools at 14U National Freestyle Duals
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
OAKS, Pa. - The first day of the 14U National Duals in freestyle determined the winners of the four preliminary pools, which established which teams remain eligible to win the team title.
The teams which were preliminary pool champions were Illinois (Pool A), Michigan Blue (Pool B), Pennsylvania Blue (Pool C) and Wisconsin (Pool D). Illinois and Wisconsin were No. 1 seeds in their pools, while Michigan Blue and Pennsylvania Blue were the No. 2 seeds in their pool.
The pool finals in both Pool A and Pool D were not determined until the last match of their dual meet.
With five matches left in the dual meet, Illinois, the overall No. 1 seed in the tournament, trailed Colorado, 29-21 in the Pool A finals. Colorado had won eight of the first 12 matches of the dual meet, including five by technical fall. Illinois closed out the match with five straight victories, all by technical fall. One after another, technical falls were secured by Tavarius Briar (115), Adonis Washington (120), Te'Jon Beals (126), Maximus Pearch (132) and Jeremiah Hayes (140).
In a back-and-forth match, Wisconsin edged Minnesota Blue 41-32 in the Pool D finals. Minnesota Blue had the early lead, 19-6, winning four of the first five matches, including two technical falls and a pin. Wisconsin rallied with wins in six of the next seven bouts. With four matches to go, Minnesota Blue won two decisions in a row from Declan Dahl (120) and Landon Rinke (126), closing Wisconsin’s lead to 32-31. Wisconsin rallied with a technical fall by Everett Zeitler (132) and a closing pin from Blake Konichek (140).
In Pool B, Michigan Blue ran away with a 60-17 victory over Connecticut. Asher Procunier scored a pin at 96 pounds, and six teammates secured technical falls: Treyton Werth (225), Clint Kohlman (84), Porter McCormick (100), Jaxson Boucher (115), Murphy Rousse (126) and Matthew Weigandt (140).
In Pool C, Pennsylvania Blue had its way with Oklahoma Red in a 56-16 victory. Pennsylvania Blue won nine of the first 10 matches to clinch the win early. There were seven technical falls in that opening run of nine wins from Cael Smith (225), Steve Mytych, Jr. (75), Dane Malone (88), Nelson Villafane (92), Noah Desmond (96), Evan Restivo (100) and Quinn Bagnell (105).
The top two teams in each preliminary pool advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, which sets the top eight teams in the final standings. Three of the four preliminary pools required a true second-place match to determine their second team in the Gold/Silver Pool. Only Pool C did not have a true-second bout, with Oklahoma Red advancing after their pool finals loss to Pennsylvania Blue.
In Pool A, Colorado defeated Pennsylvania Red, 39-33 to take true second and advance. Although Pennsylvania Red won nine of the 17 bouts, Colorado won six bonus point matches, including a technical fall from Stetson Gable in the final match at 155 pounds.
In Pool B, Ohio Gray won every match of the true-second dual meet to dominate Connecticut, 74-4. Included were pins from Luke Rafferty (84), Mason Mamich (92), Edward Zeller (126) and Lincoln James (155), plus seven technical falls.
In Pool D, California scored a 40-32 victory in their true-second match over Minnesota Blue. The first four bouts went to Minnesota Blue, but California powered back, winning six of the final seven matches of the dual meet. Getting technical falls in California’s late run were Gavin Whatley (110), Xander Fronhofer (126), Jessie Valenzuela (132) and Thomas Zubia (140).
The only No. 1 seed in a pool to be defeated on Friday morning was Indiana, who fell in the quarterfinals to Connecticut, 42-35 in Pool B. Connecticut continued its run with a semifinal victory over Utah, the No. 4 seed in the pool, but had its run cut off in the semifinals by Michigan Blue. Connecticut lost its true second bout to Ohio Gray, and ended up in the Bronze/Copper pool. Indiana finished fifth in Pool B, and qualified for the Red/Blue pool.
The color pools, which will determine final placements, were started after the preliminary pools were completed. There was at least one round held in each of the color pools, Gold/Silver, Bronze/Copper, Red/Blue, Yellow/Green, Purple and Teal.
In the Gold/Silver Pool, which determines the top eight placements, there was one round on Friday night.
In Gold/Silver Pool A, Wisconsin defeated Oklahoma Red, 42-33 and Ohio Gray edged Illinois, 37-35.
In Gold/Silver Pool B, Pennsylvania Blue handled California, 56-18, and Michigan Blue stopped Colorado, 38-32.
Final results from all of the color pools will be reported in Saturday’s wrap story. Complete Brackets are posted on USA Bracketing.
The competition concludes on Saturday, starting at 8:00 a.m. ET. There will be one session without a break with completion of the color pools, followed immediately by the finals.
All of the action will be broadcast live by FloWrestling.
