Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Washington, Illinois win their pools at 16U National Greco-Roman Duals

HERRIMAN, Utah – Day one of the 16U National Duals in Greco-Roman concluded at Zions Bank Real Academy on Wednesday. Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Washington and Illinois were the winners of the four preliminary pools, advancing to the Gold/Silver pool.


In Pool A, Pennsylvania edged out Indiana in the championship round of preliminary pool action, 41-32. It was a back and forth dual, as Pennsylvania’s Leo Murillo (88), Riley Crandall (94), Jack Stonebraker (100) and Arav Pandey (106) pulled the team into the lead in the last few matches of the dual. Indiana placed second in preliminary action, and will join Pennsylvania in the Gold/Silver pool.


Wisconsin  moved into the Gold/Silver pool after defeating Utah Gold, 52-23. With victories in six-straight matches, Wisconsin was able to add on to its lead. Isaac Weber (120), Jacob Lootans Jr. (150), Logan Ellwanger (175), Elliot Havlish (215) and Kade Splinter (285) secured pins against Utah Gold.


The Pool C champion was Washington, after they bested Virginia, 53-21. Three of Washington’s wins were by fall, from Eli Anderson (215), Dillon Regis (100) and Elijah Governor (106), while eight wins were by technical fall. Washington won 12 bouts, while Virginia tallied victories at 132, 138, 157, 190 and 113 pounds.


Illinois won Pool D to advance to the Gold/Silver pool. In the finals, Illinois defeated California, 43-31. Ten matches were won by Illinois, including six technical falls and one fall. Brian Hart Jr. (157) secured Illinois’ lone fall, while Aiden McClure (120), Thomas Banas (132), Isaac Barrientos (175), Jaxson Mathenia (215), Dominic DeMarco (94), and Ray Long (113) logged technical falls. California recorded seven wins, adding technical falls from Noah Larios (285) and Thiago Silva (106). California advanced to the Gold/Silver pool with a second-place finish.


The top two teams in each pool advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, which will determine the top eight teams in the tournament. Two pools had true second place duals, pool B and C. In pool B, Utah Gold defeated Texas, 46-29. Minnesota Blue bested Virginia, 52-25, to advance.


Color pool competition begins on Thursday morning at 8 a.m. in Herriman, Utah. The championship finals and placement matches are set for 1:30 p.m. The competition concludes with men’s freestyle on Friday and Saturday.
