U.S. wins seven Greco-Roman golds, 10 medals at U17 Pan American Championships

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Team USA flexed its muscle to open the U17 Pan American Championship at Centro de Entrenamiento de Niterói in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, claiming seven gold medals in Greco-Roman, with all10 entrants securing a medal.


Three Americans scored bonus points, either a pin or technical fall, against each opponent faced on Thursday—Ariah Mills at 48 kg, Carter Shin at 51 kg and Arseni Kikiniou at 65 kg. Both Mills and Shin opened with a quarterfinal pin before securing two technical falls to emerge with gold. It was four-straight techs for Kikiniou on his path to gold. He outscored his opponents 34-1 combined.


Additional champions for Team USA included Tommy Wurster at 55 kg, Nicholas Sorrow at 60 kg, Jayden James at 71 kg and JT Smith at 92 kg.


Silver medals were awarded to Thales Silva at 45 kg and Alex Taylor at 110 kg. The lone bronze medalist was Isai Fernandez at 80 kg. All three lost close decisions to the eventual champion in their weight class.


All told, the U.S. men gathered a 30-3 combined record with seven victories by pin and 10 by technical fall.


Team USA outpaced the field in the team standings at 230 points. Host country Brazil finished in second place with 146 points. Mexico rounded out the top three with 143 points.


The tournament continues tomorrow with the women’s freestyle competition. Action begins at 10 a.m. local time, with the finals set for 5 p.m. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is located one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern Time.
