Michigan Blue, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania Blue, Minnesota Blue win their pools at 14U National Greco-Roman Duals
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
OAKS, Pa. - The first day of the 14U National Duals in Greco-Roman determined the winners of the four preliminary pools, which established which teams remain eligible to win the team title.
The teams which were preliminary pool champions were Michigan Blue (Pool A), Wisconsin (Pool B), Pennsylvania Blue (Pool C) and Minnesota Blue (Pool D). Michigan Blue and Wisconsin entered the event as the top seeds in their pool, while Pennsylvania Blue and Minnesota Blue were seeded second in their pool.
Michigan Blue finished strong to close out a close pool finals over Iowa, 43-33, winning the six of the final nine matches. All six of those last victories were bonus point wins, with pins from Jaxson Boucher (115) and Bentley Hawkins (120), and technical falls from Grayson VanValkenburg (88), Chase VanPortfliet (92), Dominic Gorder (100) and Murphy Rousse (126). Add in falls from Brendan Kero (175) and Treyton Werth (225) at the start of the dual meet and Michigan Blue had a strong performance.
Wisconsin went on a run with seven victories in eight matches midway through the dual meet to defeat California, 45-30. The run started at 84 pounds when Cashton Treuthardt secored an 8-0 technical fall and ended with an 8-0 technical fall by Reece Vendegna at 115 pounds. In between, Wisconsin had pins from Aiden Dalie (88) and Kolten Mueller (92), and other technical falls from Aiden Dalie (88), Colton Hamill (100) and Keilan Yang (105). California finished the dual meet with three straight victories, but it was not enough to close the gap.
Pennsylvania Blue roared out of the gate with wins in five of the first six matches against Oklahoma Red, which was top seed in the pool, and powered on to win 50-22. Scoring technical falls in those opening five victories were Olympic Serrao (140), Cael Smith (225) and Steve Mytych, Jr. (75), with decisions from Shawn Verdecchio (155) and Grayden Paris (80). Oklahoma Red could never recover. Ultimately, Pennsylvania Blue won 12 of the 17 matches in the dual meet.
Minnesota Blue and Maryland went back and forth in their Pool D finals, before winning 40-36. In fact, Maryland had more victories in the dual meet with nine wins to Minnesota’s eight. The key was that Minnesota Blue’s victories were bonus point wins. Two of the Minnesota wins included an injury default and a disqualification. The other six were all technical falls from Elias Motta (155), Wes Wolke (225), Jett Foster (84), Landen Kassel (110), Declan Dahl (120) and Landon Rinke (126). Maryland actually won seven of the last ten bouts.
The top two teams in each pool advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, which will determine the top eight teams in the tournament. There was only one true second place match, in Pool C, where Oklahoma Red defeated Ohio, 41-33. Ohio opened with the first three victories, but Oklahoma Red won the next five matches and did not look back. Overall, Oklahoma Red won nine matches, with Ohio claiming eight.
.
In addition to Ohio, also advancing to the Gold/Silver pool were pool runners-up Iowa (Pool A), California (Pool B) and Maryland (Pool D).
One round of the “color” pools, which determine the final placements, was also held on Wednesday night, after the preliminary pools were completed.
The Gold/Silver pool which determines the top eight placewinners was split into two Groups of four teams, which have a round robin to determine what team will reach the finals, as well as the final placement pairings.
In the first round of the Gold/Silver Pool A, Minnesota Blue defeated Oklahoma Red, 50-27 and California stopped Michigan Blue, 45-33. In the first round of the Gold/Silver Pool B, Wisconsin defeated Iowa, 43-36 and Pennsylvania Blue beat Maryland, 48-20.
One round was also held in the Bronze/Copper pool, the Blue/Red pool, the Green pool and the Yellow Pool. All of the results of the color pools will be posted tomorrow in the final results.
Color pool competition will continue on Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m., with the championship finals set for 2:30 p.m. ET. The competition concludes with men’s freestyle on Friday and Saturday.
All of the action is broadcast live on FloWrestling.
