by SJ Asmann, USA Wrestling
Jeremy Carver (Indiana) is one of nine 14U Greco-Roman champions that remain in contention to win a 16U Greco-Roman National title.
FARGO, N.D.—On the seventh day of the 2025 U.S. Marine Corps Junior Nationals, Greco-Roman action began. A record number of 16U athletes competed across 30 mats inside the Fargodome on the campus of North Dakota State University on Friday.
Entering the first session of 16U Greco-Roman, there was only one returning champion aiming to repeat the result in Ivan Ivanov of Idaho at 175 pounds. Ivanov cruised through his first session with a trio of technical falls, including two in less than 50 seconds. Ivanov is one of 15 wrestlers from Idaho that remain in contention to win a title, and won his 2024 title at 157 pounds.
There were three wrestlers that fell short in the 2024 16U finals, Tristan Pino of Colorado at 106 pounds, Montero Royal of South Carolina at 113 pounds and James Whitbred of Pennsylvania at 157 pounds.
Pino spent just under two minutes on the mat on day one, with a 10-0 technical fall and a win by disqualification in round two, while ahead in the match 13-0. A pair of technical falls pushed Whitbred further towards the top spot on the podium, while Royal dropped a 6-2 decision to Rowdy Angst of Missouri.
Eight athletes registered in the 16U Greco-Roman division won titles earlier this week in freestyle. Of the eight, only six remain on the championship side. Miro Parr-Coffin of Washington (94) secured three wins to start his tournament, all technical falls.
Thiago Silva of California (113) also went 3-0 in the first session with two 8-0 technical falls and a 12-8 decision. Tommy Wurster of Ohio (120), Colin Rutlin of Missouri (150), Satoshi Davis of Nevada (215) and Noah Larios of California (285) round out the six 16U freestyle champions that are looking to double up on titles this week. Rutlin was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the freestyle tournament.
Leo Murillo of Pennsylvania (88) and Peyton Hornsby of Indiana (150) move to the consolation side of the bracket, and will continue to wrestle for a spot on the podium tomorrow.
Nine 14U Greco-Roman National champions entered into the 16U division this year. All nine are alive on the championship side after day one. Ty Martin of Iowa (88) opened his tournament with a 9-0 technical fall in 55 seconds, while Arav Pandey of Pennsylvania (106) scored a 9-0 technical fall in the first period of his opening match, followed by a fall at 50 seconds.
Indiana’s Jeremy Carver (113), who placed sixth in freestyle, earned back-to-back falls for a hot start on Friday. Jaxsen Bailey of Connecticut (126) also had a successful first day of Greco-Roman action, securing a fall at 1:40 and a 9-6 decision.
Three of the 14U champions are in the 144-pound bracket. Shane Ostermiller of Alaska (144) is 3-0 with an 8-0 technical fall, a 10-2 technical fall and a fall at 1:35. Kaden Clark of Alabama (144) ended the day with a pair of decisions and an 8-0 technical fall in 23 seconds, and Josiah Beltran of Wisconsin (144) went 3-0, outscoring his opponents 25-0.
Tyde Nelsen of Iowa (175) and Kade Splinter of Wisconsin (215) continue their time in Fargo on the championship side. Nelsen was guided by two first-period technical falls, and Splinter’s wins included a pair of technical falls in less than a minute each.
