World champion Sanchez, returning champion Hodgins in Boys National Recruiting Showcase quarterfinals
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
DES MOINES, Iowa - The first day of the 2024 Boys National High School Recruiting Showcase was a display of high-level folkstyle action, where the quarterfinalists were determined in all weight classes in Hyvee Hall in the Iowa Events Center.
This is an elite competition in which all of the entries must have met specific performance requirements in order to qualify. The boys will be competing in folkstyle, which is the style they will wrestle in college.
Reaching the quarterfinals at 106 pounds is 2024 U17 World freestyle champion Samuel Sanchez of Esperanza High School in California, who won his opening match by technical fall. Sanchez will battle Charlie Boelman of the Sebolt Wrestling Academy on Saturday morning
The only returning Showcase champion in the field, Tanner Hodgins of the Shore Thing WC of New Jersey will compete in the 190-pound quarterfinals against Brock Rios of Wright Wrestling Academy. Hodgins won his title last year at 165 pounds.
Returning Showcase runner-up Brandon Dean of Betterman Elite Wrestling in Colorado has powered to the 157 pound quarterfinals, where he wrestles Samuel Zanton of the Team Nazar Training Center. Dean was last year’s 150 pound runner-up.
A pair of past U17 Greco-Roman World Team members are among the quarterfinalists, Billy Greenwood of GRIT Athletics WC in Colorado (150) and Aiden Cooley of Best Trained Wrestling in Texas (190).
Past U15 Pan American double champions Chase Karenbauer of the Bad Karma WC of Pennsylvania (106) and Jensen Boyd of Indiana (126) are also in the quarterfinals. Karenbauer is seeking to win two titles this weekend, as he also reached the quarterfinals of the 9th-10th grade division this morning.
USA Wrestling traditionally tracks all of the high school state champions who are entered in the National Recruiting Showcase events, and there were 64 state champions who pre-registered to compete.
Among the many state champions in the quarterfinals are four-time state champion William Anderson of Alabama (144) and three-time state champions Ben DeForest of North Dakota (132) and Liam Fox of Wyoming (157).
Competition continues on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with the quarterfinals. The championship finals are tentatively scheduled for the afternoon session, which begins at 2:30 p.m.
All of the action is broadcast live by FloWrestling.
