NYKOBING FALSTER, Denmark - U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers Max Black (60 kg) and Payton Jacobson (77 kg) have won matches on the first day of the respected Thor Masters on Friday..
The tournament is conducted under different bracketing rules than a normal UWW international tournament. This is a double-elimination competition, with either one pool or two pools.
Black (60 kg), a two-time U20 World Team member, opened with a 9-3 victory over Nikita Sementiev of Ukraine. His second match is scheduled for Saturday morning against Adam Silverin of Sweden.
Jacobson, a past Senior National Team member, also won a match at 77 kg. He opened with a 3-3 criteria loss to Vjekoslav Luburic of Croatia. He came back in the second round with an 11-0 technical fall victory over fellow American Lukas Polonic.
The other members of the U.S. delegation did not secure a win on day one. Five have been eliminated. Six U.S. wrestlers have been assigned their opponents for Saturday morning’s session, and remain eligible for a medal.
Aden Attao, a 2022 U20 World bronze medalist, lost a close 3-2 match to 2020 World bronze medalist Mentas Knystautas of Lithuania in his first bout. His next opponent on Saturday is 2020 European bronze medalist Jello Krahmer of Germany.
Preliminary rounds continue on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. local time. Bronze medal bouts are at 3:30 p.m., with gold-medal matches at 4:30 p.m. Nykobing Falster is six hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
