Alejandro Sancho (U.S. Army WCAP/Colorado Springs, Colo.) has been named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on December 19, 2023.
At Senior Nationals in Fort Worth, Texas, last weekend, top seed and 2020 Olympian Alejandro Sancho won a tough bracket en route to earning the 67 kg spot for the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in early Spring. In the semifinals, Sancho earned a 3-1 decision over his 2023 Final X opponent Robert Perez III.
In a battle of past World Team members in the 67 kg finals, Sancho mounted a spectacular comeback to edge Peyton Omania, 7-6. Omania hit a four-pointer early and led 5-0 at the break. Omania worked on his early lead and added a point to work to a 6-0 advantage. Sancho nailed a four pointer, got a caution and two to tie it at 6-6. A failed Omania challenge made it 7-6.
