McKendree women top North Central and UW-Stevens Point to stay unbeaten; North Central goes 2-1 in duals

(NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Jan. 31) – No. 1 McKendree University women's wrestling team competed in a double dual afternoon, at the North Central Duals Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats went undefeated over University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (UWSP) and No.4 North Central College, and improve to 5-0.
Due to transportation troubles, McKendree only competed against two other programs in the North Central Duals. Sam Schmitz's first competition of the afternoon was against UW-Stevens Point, taking eight of the 10 weight classes. The Bearcats had four of the victories come by pin in the 109-lb, 130-lb, 136-lb and 155-lb classes. They would add on two more victories by decision for the 38-8 win.
The second contest of the day, No.1 McKendree took on their other ranked opponent, No.4 North Central College. The Bearcats would take nine of the 10 weight classes, with eight victories by pin. Their only loss would come by a decision in the 170-lb class, but still record the 44-3 dual win.
McKendree will be back on the mat for their first home contest of the season. The McKendree Bearcat Duals will be held all day in the Harry M. Statham Sports Center, on Sunday, Feb.7.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (Jan, 31, 2021) - Hosting two top 15 teams, the No. 4 North Central College women's wrestling team won two of three matches on Sunday in Residence Hall/Recreational Center.
In their first match of the day, the Cardinals took down the No. 13 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point 33-16. Amanda Martinez (130) and Malea Palahniuk (155) both won via pin while Angelina Graff (109) and Abbey Denney (136) each won their matches by tech fall. Amanda Martinez (123), Yelena Makoyed (170), and Alondra Aguayo (191) received forfeits to secure the North Central win.
Against Adrian College, the Cardinals continued where they had left off as they defeated the Bulldogs 31-14 for their second victory of the day. North Central racked up three straight tech falls as Nguyen-Smith and Martinez secured theirs in under a minute while Denney won during the four minute mark. Palahnuik earned her second pin of the day while Amber Latta won by an 8-2 decision as the Cardinals tallied their second win of the meet.
In their final contest of the day, No. 2 McKendree lived up to the hype as they won handily, 44-3. Makoyed earned the lone Cardinal win as she won a 5-2 decision over fifth-ranked Joye Levendusky for her third victory of the event.
