No. 2 McKendree women beat No. 3 Emmanuel, No. 4 King and No. 7 Colorado Mesa in quad-meet at King

(BRISTOL, Tenn. – Jan. 17) – The No. 2 McKendree University women's wrestling team competed in their first quad dual of the season Sunday. Sam Schmitz's team took all three matches of the afternoon over top-ranked opponents, No.7 Colorado Mesa, No.3 Emmanuel, and No.4 King University.

McKendree's first competition of the afternoon was No.7 Colorado Mesa, where the Bearcats handed the Mavericks their first loss of the season. For many of the Bearcats, this was their first collegiate competition of the season, including winning over nationally ranked opponents. The Bearcats took the first three weight classes, and would come back with four-consecutive victories by tech/ fall, and the final weight class to secure the win.

McKendree's second dual of the afternoon was against No.3 Emmanuel College, where No.1 Pauline Granados (Rialto, CA/Carter) came out of the gate to take a 6-0 decision victory to get her team their first round of points. The Bearcat would get five-consecutive victories by tech/fall in the 116-lb, 123-lb, 130-lb,136-lb, and 143-lb weight classes, to keep Emmanuel scoreless. The Bearcat would take nine of the 10 weight classes for their second win of the afternoon.

The finals dual of the dual, No.2 McKendree faced No.4 King University, where both teams were hungry for the final win of the afternoon. King was the first to get points in the dual, from a high-intensity match between the No.1 and No.4 101-lb wrestlers, the No.6 and No.8 109-lb wrestlers, and the No.3 and No.2 136-lb wrestlers. A huge 6-2 decision win in the 116-lb, pin in the 130-lb class and 5-0 decision win in the 143-lb class would inch the Bearcats closer to taking back the contest. A tech fall in the 155-lb class would tie the contest up, and a quick pin in the final weight class would secure the Bearcats' win.

Editor’s Note: The rankings look to change after this quad meet after No. 4 King beat No. 3 Emmanuel 23-18, to go 2-1 during the event. Emmanuel finished 1-2, while Colorado Mesa finished 0-3 for the day. The No. 1 team in NCAA preseason rankings was Simon Fraser, which chose not to wrestle this year, so these teams should move up accordingly in the next ranking.
