Match of the Day: 54-year-old Andre Metzger comes one match away from placing at the 2014 U.S. Open
by USA Wrestling
Andre Metzger put in a respectable, 2-2, performance at the 2014 U.S. Open, finishing one victory shy of the 71 kg podium in Greco-Roman. What is remarkable about the feat, is that Metzger was 54-years-old at the time.
Metzger initially came out of retirement to make a run at the 2012 Olympic Team at 74 kg in Greco-Roman. He turned in a, 0-2, performance at the Olympic Team Trials, but continued to compete over the next couple of years.
Metzger is a two-time World bronze medalist (1979, 1987) and a one-time World silver medalist (1986) in men’s freestyle. He is well versed in Greco as well, and captured a U.S. Senior Greco-Roman title in 1980.
