After claiming a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia at 76 kg, Matt Lindland made the bump up to 85 kg. The move did not affect him adversely, as he went on to claim silver at the 2001 World Championships in Patras, Greece.
Before he could claim international success however, Lindland had to conquer the weight class domestically. One of his biggest challenges was returning Olympian Quincey Clark. An NCAA finalist for Oklahoma, Clark had placed in the top ten at the 1998 and 1999 World Championships. He also earned silver at the 2001 Pan Am Championships.
