AUSTIN, Texas – Four top young U.S. women’s wrestling stars were showcased as part of FloWrestling’s Halloween card, which were held alongside the Flo 8-Man 195-pound Challenge on Saturday night.
Cadet World champion and Youth Olympic Games champion Emily Shilson defeated Stefana Jelacic, 7-2 in a lightweight battle.
Jelacic came out with some upperbody wrestling, slowing down Shilson’s leg attack offense. Jelacic was hit for passivity twice, putting her on the shot clock. Shilson’s sweep single didn’t get finished with some strong Jelacic defense, but Jelacic did not score in 30 seconds to give Shilson a 1-0 lead which held until the break.
In the second period, Shilson hit a high single leg to a step out to lead 2-0. Shilson was able to secure a front headlock spin behind to make it 4-0. From the top, Shilson was unable to turn Jelacic. The match tightened up with a go behind by Jelacic in the final minute made it 4-2, but Jelacic could not score on top. Shilson got a stepout in the next few seconds, and then added a takedown in the final 10 seconds to make it 7-2.
This was a much more competitive bout than a few weeks ago, when Shilson scored a 10-0 technical fall over Jelacic. Last year as a freshman at Augsburg, Shilson won two college national titles, taking the WCWA title and the NCWWC (NCAA-only) title.
Five-time age-group World medalist Macey Kilty defeated National Team member Desiree Zavala with a 10-0 technical fall early in the second period.
Kilty completed a leg attack for a takedown and 2-0 lead. Kilty quickly hit a low single and completed the takedown for a 4-0 lead. Kilty secured an ankle lace to get a 6-0 lead with 1:30 left in the period. A Kilty go-behind takedown made it 8-0, and Zavala stopped a Kilty ankle lace. The period ended 8-0.
Kilty secured a nice single leg, and was able to finish to make it a 10-0 technical fall just 39 seconds into the second period.
Both were members of the 2019-20 Senior National Teams, with Zavala at 62 kg and Kilty at 65 kg. Kilty is a past Cadet World champion, and has won age-group medals on the Cadet, Junior and U23 levels.
