Mantanona and Strickenberger win OW awards at Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa – The high school boys divisions of the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Nationals wrestled to completion with two athletes—Beau Mantanona (California) and Jett Strickenberger (Colorado)— claiming the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler accolades on Saturday afternoon in Des Moines, Iowa.

9th-10th grade recap
Recording six falls and one major decision, Mantanona was the 120 pound champion in the 9th-10th grade division. Representing the CVBJJ, Beau wasn’t the only one from his club to find success. In fact, the CVBJJ, based in California, brought four athletes to the competition and left with four champions in the 9th-10th division, including Brock Mantanona at 100 pounds, Sonny Kling at 195 pounds and Daniel Herrera at 285 pounds.

“It’s been tough to train in the middle of the pandemic, but these guys really train hard when there’s a tournament to prepare for,” CVBJJ coach Anthony Mantanona said. “We’ve had this tournament in our sights for a while. The kids were excited and really stepped it up. They all wrestled really tough. Their confidence built as the tournament went on and these guys were awesome.”

There was one repeat champion in the 9th-10th division as Brayden Thompson claimed the title at 160 pounds. Of his five wins on the weekend, Thompson recorded three major decisions and one technical fall.

Others topping the podium in the 9th-10th division were Carter Freeman (106), Colby Crouch (113), Hayden Whidden (126), Vincent Robinson (132), Braxton Strick (138), Cody Merrill (145), Erich Trinski (152), Justin Rademacher (170), Soren Herzog (182) and Dylan Russo (220).

11th-12th grade recap
Navigating his way through an impressive bracket, Strickenberger, a 2019 Cadet World Team member, won the 11th-12th grade division crown at 120 pounds. His bracket included multiple state champions and state medalists. In the finals, Strickenberger defeated returning Preseason Nationals champion Joey Cruz, 3-2, for the crown.

2019 U15 World silver medalist Bradley Gillum picked up a title on Saturday, winning the bracket at 170 pounds. Gillum put together a solid performance, defeating the No. 1 seed Dante Roggio from Indiana in the quarterfinals. For the gold, Gillum outlasted Trent Munoz of California, who was on a roll, taking out the No. 3 seed early in the tournament.

Other 11th-12th grade champions on Saturday included Codie Cuerbo (106), Nicholas Gonzalez (113), Luis Ortiz (126), Reese Davis (132), Josh Taylor (138), Nicholas Novak (145), Charlie Evans (152), Isaac Klinkhammer (160), Maxwell Wilner (182), Joey Braunagel (195), Max Ramberg (220) and Emilio Franco (285).
