Hildebrandt, Shai and Louive collect Senior National titles on Friday night

CORALVILLE, Iowa – Three women were crowned champions on Friday night to wrap up the first day of the 2020 Senior Nationals in Coralville, Iowa. Only three women’s freestyle weights were contested: 50 kg, 53 kg and 57 kg.
The most dramatic final came at 57 kg, where National Team member Lauren Louive trailed Xochitl Mota-Pettis, who was having a phenomenal tournament, defeating two-time World silver medalist Alli Ragan earlier in the day.
Down 8-6 with just 13 seconds, Louive hit a massive head lock and earned the fall for her first national title.
In the 50 kg finals, 2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt faced Amy Fearnside, a fellow U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center athlete. Fearnside was fresh off perhaps the biggest win of her career, defeating two-time Senior World medalist Alyssa Lampe in Friday’s semifinals.
Hildebrandt cooled down Fearnside’s red hot day with an 8-0 victory for her second national championship, thanks to three takedowns and a leg lace.
Experience proved to the difference maker as National Team member and freestyle vet Katherine Shai dominated Cadet World champion Ronna Heaton, collecting five takedowns for a 10-0 early in the second period.
It was Shai’s first Senior-level national title.
