Mota-Pettis stuns Ragan, LaMont and Miranda beaten in quarterfinals at 2020 Senior Nationals

The first session of the 2020 Senior Nationals was riddled with upsets in the Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle divisions. The most notable upset came at 57 kg in women’s freestyle, when Xochitl Mota-Pettis pinned two-time Senior World silver medalist Alli Ragan in the first period.
Other major upsets came in Greco-Roman at 60 kg as the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds went down in the quarterfinals.
University of Nebraska wrestler and ninth-seeded Alex Thomsen upended seven-time age-group World Team member and 2016 Junior World bronze medalist Taylor LaMont with a 10-4 decision. On the other side of the arena, Northern Colorado athlete Mosha Schwartz edged out three-time age-group World Teamer Randon Miranda, 8-7.
There are several exciting semifinals on deck for this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. CT.
Keep an eye out for the 50 kg semifinals in women’s freestyle as Senior World medalists Sarah Hildebrandt and Alyssa Lampe seek finals bids for a potential all-star championship bout.
At 77 kg, Senior World Team member Pat Smith will battle for a spot in the finals.
Another exciting weight class is at 87 kg, which features U.S. World Team member Joe Rau as the No. 2 seed and 2015 Pan American Games bronze medalist Alan Vera, formally a competitor for Cuba, who is the No. 1 seed.
Cadet World champion and two-time Junior World medalist Cohlton Schultz advanced to the semifinals at 130 kg in Greco.
