Vermont cancels high school wrestling and indoor track this year due to pandemic

Reports are coming in from media stories concerning the decision in the state of Vermont concerning winter high school sports. In short, both wrestling and indoor track were cancelled for high school student-athletes this year due to the pandemic.
Editor’s Note: To our knowledge, Vermont becomes the first state that has cancelled wrestling in its entirety at the high school level due to COVID-19.
A full announcement is due today from the Vermont Principals’ Association, but is not yet available. We will share some of the media reports on this unprecedented decision.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont high schools will have no wrestling and indoor track season this winter, and Vermont ski resorts will have strict new capacity limits according to new guidance released Tuesday.

Vermont officials say in addition to the cancelation of wrestling and indoor track, cheering squads cannot practice vocal routines, and spectators are not allowed for any indoor games or practices.
For sports that got the ok, practices can start November 30th and competition can begin on January 11. Delays or cancelations could happen to winter sports if COVID cases continue to spread. The state doesn’t want any team-based social gatherings and the state expanded the mask mandate to referees and coaches.
A detailed list of changes will be released soon by the Vermont Principals' Association.

State officials unveiled sweeping changes Tuesday to how Vermont's high school winter sports will proceed during the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The short version: More masks, no fans and games on hold until the new year.
And, as hinted at in recent weeks, the unique challenges posed by wrestling and indoor track mean neither sport will be offered this winter, according Julie Moore, secretary of the Agency of Natural Resources.
Vermont's school-based winter sports still eligible for competition include basketball, ice hockey, alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, bowling, gymnastics, dance and cheerleading, though the latter is now prohibited from performing vocal routines this winter.
But the most notable change going forward is the decision to prohibit fans from attending indoor sporting events — a move in line with the recent changes to guidance for recreation and college sports.

High school sports in Vermont are on for the 2020-21 winter season, it was announced Tuesday in a press briefing by Julie Moore, secretary of the agency of natural resources.
While basketball, hockey, downhill skiing, snowboarding, bowling, competitive cheer, dance and gymnastics were given the OK, there will be no wrestling or indoor track and field, the state citing it could not offer those sports safely durng the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Also, there will be no vocalizing from cheer squads during practice or competition.
