Jake Varner of the United States reached his first World medal match at 96 kg at the 2011 World Championships in Istabul, Turkey, where he battled Taimuraz Tigiyev of Kazakhstan, a 2008 Olympic silver medalist, who also competed for Russia as a youth. The match was determined by three big moves, including two challenges which determined who scored on key actions. Varner would go on to win the 2012 Olympic Games. Tigiyev would later have his 2008 Olympic medal stripped away many years later, after the IOC retested his test sample and ruled that he had violated doping rules. Enjoy the match.
