by National African American Wrestling Hall of Fame

The National African American Wrestling Hall of Fame was publicly announced in January 2020.

The mission of NAAWHOF is: to recognize the extraordinary contributions of African-American wrestlers nationally and internationally. We will educate and support the African-American community to participate in all aspects of wrestling. We will operate hall of fame museums nationally to celebrate, educate and showcase athletic achievements of African- American wrestlers.

We are actively accepting membership. There are several membership levels; Athlete(non-voting), General (non-voting), Coach(voting) and Officials (voting). First 100 coaches/officials’ membership purchased to will be considered Founding Members and qualify for free 2021 membership.

The National African American Wrestling Hall of Fame aims to educate parents of minority athletes of the life/monetary benefits of wrestling to increase awareness/participation level of African American athletes nationally.

We will use the power of positive role modeling to cultivate the African American market. We believe by promoting African American top wrestlers specifically to young African American athletes in metropolitan areas will increase participation in the sport of wrestling.

Message from Executive Director Mike Foy

I am honored to introduce the National African-American Hall of Fame. We are dedicated to promoting the sport of wrestling to the African-American community. It is our responsibility to share the valuable lessons only the sport of wrestling can provide young men and women.

It was about seven years ago when I had "a man in the mirror" experience. Since that moment forward, I have dedicated my life to helping young men and women reap the benefits in the sport of wrestling. Three years ago, I accepted the head coaching job at Leo High School located on the southside of Chicago. I believe creating the National African-American Wrestling Hall of Fame is an extension of that vision.

After years of coaching, I made a disturbing observation. I found that very few African-American wrestlers knew of any of the National or International Champions I routinely referenced in practice. I felt that something had to be done on a large and sustainable level to educate our children of these role models. So I call a few of my teammates to discuss and address this issue.

We knew it was time create locations throughout the United States to celebrate decades of African-American Wrestlers in the sport of wrestling. It is the vision of NAAWHOF to expose, educate and illustrate the benefit wrestling has on a young person. We are asking you to get involved by joining NAAWHOF Today and help inspire the next generation of wrestlers.

Editor's Note: Mike Foy was a two-time U.S. Olympic Team member in Greco-Roman wrestling and a 1989 World silver medalist.
