The 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, were the first to feature women’s wrestling. There were only four weight classes wrestled, 48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and 72 kg. The U.S. claimed medals at both 48 kg, where Patricia Miranda took bronze, and 63 kg, where Sara McMann took silver.
McMann, a 2003 World silver medalist, punched her ticket to the finals in stellar fashion with a first period fall over Stavroula Zygouri of Greece. In the finals, McMann fell to the legendary Kaori Icho of Japan. Icho would win three more Olympic gold medals and ten World titles by the end of her career. McMann would claim World bronze in 2005 and 2007.
