Sam Hazewinkel, a 2012 Olympian, came out of retirement to make one last run at a World Team in 2018. However, it wasn’t in men’s freestyle, the style that he wrestled in the Olympics, it was Greco-Roman.
Hazewinkel, a 2008 Greco-Roman World University gold medalist, made the finals of the U.S. Open in his initial return to the mat. There he would fall, 10-4, to Max Nowry.
Hazewinkel would then have to battle through the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament for another shot at Nowry. In the best-of-three finals, Hazewinkel defeated Nowry two matches to none. Nowry would make the 2019 World Team and finish fifth at the World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
