It was a battle between two of the nation's greatest heavyweights, both who would later become Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. The battle for the 2000 U.S. Open title was between Stephen Neal and Kerry McCoy. Both had spectacular college careers, Neal at Cal-State Bakersfield and McCoy at Penn State. This was a huge battle because it set the stage for the upcoming U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Dallas.
Neal was coming off his best season in 1999, making his first U.S. Senior World Team, then blast-doubling his way to a 1999 World gold medal. McCoy had competed in his first Senior Worlds in 2018, placing fourth in the Worlds. Only one of these legends ultimately made the 2000 Olympic Team, which later competed in Sydney, Australia. Enjoy the action.
