Mack, Martin win golds, and USA takes five medals at Henri Deglane in France

NICE, France – Led by individual champions Shelton Mack (Charlottesville, Va./Titan Mercury WC) at 61 kg and Myles Martin (Columbus, Ohio/Titan Mercury WC) at 86 kg, five U.S. men’s freestyle wrestlers came home with medals from the Grand Prix of France – Henri Deglane Challenge.
Mack powered through four opponents on the way to the title, including securing a 3-1 victory over 2014 World bronze medalist Uladzislau Andreyeu of Belarus in the gold-medal round. Included in Mack’s day were a pair of technical fall victories. Mack competed at Pitt in college.
Martin, a Senior Nationals runner-up and a 2016 NCAA champion for Ohio State, also had four wins on the way to gold. Martin stopped 2018 Mediterranean Games silver medalist Akhmed Aibuev of France, 10-6 in the finals.
There were two silver medalists from the USA, Dean Heil (Norman, Okla. (Titan Mercury WC) at 65 kg and Derek White (Stillwater, Okla. (Titan Mercury WC) at 97 kg
Heil, a two-time NCAA champion for Oklahoma State, won his first three bouts by decision, before falling in the finals to 2019 Medved International bronze medalist Georges Koliev of Belarus, 2-1.
White, an NCAA runner-up for Oklahoma State, was beaten in the finals by 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Albert Saritov of Romania, 10-0. White, who finished 2-2 for the tournament, had also lost to Saratov in his pool competition by a 7-2 score earlier in the day.
Coming home with a bronze medal at 65 kg was former North Carolina star Evan Henderson (Jersey City, N.J./Titan Mercury WC). Henderson finished with a strong 3-1 record, including a 14-6 win over Niurgun Skriabin of Belarus in the bronze-medal bout. Skriabin, a former Russian, was third in the 2014 University Worlds.
