KLIPPAN, Sweden – Four U.S. women wrestlers remain unbeaten after the first day of the UWW Cadet competition at the respected Klippan Lady Open on Friday.
Those who advance to Saturday’s competition without a loss are:
• Nyla Valencia (Morgan Hill, Calif./Bulldog WC) at 49 kg
• Skylar Hattendorf (Hooksett, N.H.) at 61 kg
• Amit Elor (Walnut Creek, Calif./Titan Mercury) at 65 kg
• Kennedy Blades (Broadview, Ill/Izzy Style) at 69 kg
This tournament is being conducted over two days in the old vertical pairing system. Weight classes are split into two pools, or in smaller weight classes in a single pool. It is a double elimination format, where athletes cross-bracket to compete against a wrestler from the other pool in the medal-match round.
The USA has four of its best high school wrestlers competing at 65 kg/143 lbs. Included are three wrestlers who were ranked No. 1 in the nation at their high school weights: No. 1 Kylie Welker of Wisconsin at 132 pounds, No. 1 Reese Larramendy of Nevada at 144 pounds and No. 1 Amit Elor of California at 152 pounds. Also add in No. 2 Lillian Freitas of California at 144 pounds.
Elor ended up beating all three of her American opponents in a row on Friday, stopping Freitas in a 10-0 technical fall, beating Welker by a 4-0 decision, and pinning Larramendy in 1:17. Elor has clinched first place in Pool A, and will face Elena Reinholtsen of Norway in the gold-medal match on Saturday.
Also at 65 kg, in a battle of the top two ranked in the nation at 144 pounds, No. 2 Freitas defeated No. 1 Larramendy, 8-1.
Blades won three matches in a row in her five-athlete round-robin. If she wins her final match on Saturday against Synne Eriksen of Norway, Blades will claim a gold medal.
Valencia won two matches by technical fall, and has one more match on Saturday morning in her pool which will determine which medal she will compete for.
Hattendorf scored a pin and a technical fall in her pool competition, and also has one more pool match to determine which medal she will wrestle for.
Five U.S. wrestlers lost one match, but remain eligible to continue to wrestle, and still have a possibility to win a medal: Virginia Foard of Virginia at 40 kg, Sterling Dias of Nevada at 43 kg, Ava Bayless of Pennsylvania at 53 kg, plus Welker and Freitas.
Dias went 1-1 in her three-athlete roundrobin and will not wrestle again. However, the medal earns will not be determined until her two opponents wrestle each other on Saturday morning.
In the results below, we list the next opponent of the U.S. athletes who are still competing in the tournament will face next.
