Semifinals set for Virginia Duals National College division; unseeded Maryland vs. No. 2 Rider; No. 1 Virginia vs. No. 4 ODU

HAMPTON, Va. – The semifinals have been set for the 2020 Virginia Duals National College division, which features eight NCAA Div. I teams. This is the 40th year of this historic and trailblazing event, the Granddaddy of the major college dual meet tournaments.
Three of the four seeded teams advanced to the semifinals with quarterfinal wins on Friday. No. 1 Virginia will battle No. 4 Old Dominion, and No. 2 Rider will face unseeded Maryland, at the 2:00 p.m. Eastern time session on Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum.
Maryland secured a 22-18 victory over No. 3 seed Fresno State, winning on the strength of bonus points, as each team secured five victories. The Terrapin light weights came out strong as Brandon Cray scored a major decision at 125 over Destiny Summers, followed by a pin by King Sandoval over Gary Joint at 133 pounds. In addition, Jaron Smith secured six team points with an injury default win over Ryan Reyes at 197 pounds. Fresno State’s lone bonus point victory came at heavyweight, as All-American Josh Hokit pinned Parker Robinson.

In the semifinals, Maryland will face No. 2 seed Rider, who dominated Duke, 47-3, taking nine of the 10 bouts. Included were two forfeits, and pins by Richie Koehler (133), Pete Lipari (141) and George Walton (184).

In the top half of the bracket, No. 1 seed Virginia won six of the 10 bouts in their 23-12 win over Kent State, including a pin by Quinn Miller at heavyweight, and a technical fall victory at 157 pounds by Justin McCoy.

Old Dominion, the No. 4 seeded team, secured an 18-13 win over Penn, also winning six of the 10 bouts. The difference came in the heavy weights, as ODU won three of the four highest weight classes, with wins from Alex Cramer (174), Antonio Agee (184) and Timothy Young (197).

The semifinals are also set in the American College Division, as No. 1 seed Kutztown will battle No. 4 seed Liberty, and No. 2 seed Ferrum will face unseeded Waynesburg. The only seeded team to lose in the quarterfinals was No. 3 Emmanuel, which fell to Waynesburg, 24-19. The American College Division semifinals will also be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
