Army and Marines win their first two bouts to set up finals showdown in Armed Forces Greco-Roman

Bremerton, Wash. – The U.S. Army and the U.S. Marine Corps finished with perfect 2-0 records, setting up a championship match this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. PT at the 2020 Armed Forces Greco-Roman Championships, beling hosted at Naval Base Kitsap.


The Army opened with a 45-0 victory over the host U.S. Navy, winning all eight contested matches and securing two forfeits. In the match, the Army athletes secured three pins and five technical falls.


In the second round, the Army won eight of the nine contested bouts to defeat the Air Force 47-5. Included were two pins and four technical falls.


Army star Lucas Sheridan had a pair of pins at 97 kg, stopping their opponents in 27 seconds and 40 seconds.


The Marines also won their two duals handily. They opened with a 43-9 win over the Air Force. Included were six technical falls and a pin.


In the second round, the Marines won all eight contested bouts to defeat the Navy, 42-1. All eight of the Marines wins against Navy were technical falls.


The Army is seeking its 19th straight Armed Forces title, not only in Greco-Roman but also in freestyle.


The highest placed Senior U.S. Greco‐Roman athlete, per weight category, winning a gold or silver medal, who has yet to qualify, will qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials ‐ Wrestling at Penn State in University Park, Pa., April 4-5.


There are 12 athletes entered in the Greco-Roman tournament who are already qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, six from the U.S. Army and six from the U.S. Marine Corps.
