USA Wrestling and FloWrestling are pleased to announce the creation of a new women’s freestyle competition, the Captains’ Cup presented by the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club, which will be held in Iowa City, Iowa, Feb. 13-14, and broadcast live by FloWrestling.
The event will feature six teams of elite women’s freestyle wrestlers from the United States competing for $50,000 in prize money. Each team will have six athletes, covering the six Olympic weight classes in women’s freestyle (with a 2 kg per day allowance).
Organizers are also working on adding an international element to the event, which could be announced in the near future.
“The pandemic has been a tough situation for everyone to work through, but out of every difficult situation, you must look for the positives that can be gained and learned. The Captains’ Cup event has been created because of the obstacles we face. Our athletes need matches, so we looked for a way that we can get the most number of athletes quality matches. The Captains’ Cup will be a dual-meet format that will provide a competitive atmosphere in an always-exciting team format. USA Wrestling is excited to come together with the Titan Mercury WC and Flo Wrestling to produce and present this event. We believe it is a win-win situation for all involved and for women’s wrestling,” said USA Wrestling National Women’s Coach Terry Steiner.
Six U.S. women wrestlers will be named captains, and will select their team through a virtual public draft on Jan. 23.
The plan is to have the women who qualified the USA for the Olympic Games serve as the captains: Sarah Hildebrandt (50 kg), Jacarra Winchester (53 kg), Helen Maroulis (57 kg), Kayla Miracle (62 kg), Tamyra Mensah-Stock (68 kg) and Adeline Gray (75 kg), pending confirmation of their participation. The Captains’ Cup draft for the U.S. teams will be broadcast by FloWrestling.
The championship team will receive $18,000 (with $3,000 to each wrestler). The runner-up team will earn $12,000 ($2,000 to each wrestler) and the third-place team will receive $6,000 ($1,000 per wrestler). Each U.S. team captain receives an additional $2,000. There will also be a $2,000 bonus awarded to the Outstanding Wrestler, which will be determined by whoever scores the most points in total during the event. In the case of a tie, the winner of the OW award will be selected by vote from the tournament’s commission.
"With the Olympic Trials just around the corner, we want to provide opportunities for the USA's wrestlers to be as sharp and prepared as possible. Our efforts with USA Wrestling and Flowrestling to present the Captains’ Cup will give our wrestlers the benefit of solid competition, while giving wrestling fans an exciting showcase of women's wrestling," said Andy Barth, founder of the Titan Mercury WC.
The U.S. athletes eligible for the draft will be made up of 36 athletes, including National Team athletes, plus U23 and college wrestlers. There will be 36 U.S. women (six per weight) who will be selected to attend a training camp held alongside the Captains’ Cup, and will be required to also compete in the event.
The event will be held in an undisclosed location in Iowa City, with no fans allowed. Teams will be split into two pools. There will be one match held at a time, a popular format used at the recent FloWrestling RTC Cup competition.
Additional details on this exciting competition will be released soon. Stay tuned.
