AUSTIN, Texas – World champion Jacarra Winchester and past Senior Nationals champion Tiare Ikei were winners of a pair of featured women’s freestyle bouts, as part of the FloWrestling 150-pound 8-Man Challenge on Friday night.
Winchester, who has been competing at 53 kg for the Olympic year, gave up some size and weight to Final X runner-up Lauren Louive, who is expected at 57 kg this season. However, she was able to secure a variety of takedowns and turns to score a 10-0 first-period technical fall.
Winchester started with a double leg takedown and a gutwrench for a 4-0 lead. She finished off a single leg takedown to make it 6-0. A Winchester throw-by made it 8-0. Winchester hit a slick foot sweep, then got a go-behind takedown to close it at 10-0 right as the first period ended.
“My goal this year is to finish everybody in the first period, because I am capable of that,” said Winchester.
Ikei, also a 53 kg competitor, battled Amy Fearnside, who is going 50 kg for the Olympic year. The match was tight, but Ikei was able to toss Fearnside for a pin in 3:36
The first period was tight, with Ikei securing the only point when Fearnside was placed on the shot clock and could not score. Early in the second period, from a under-over position, Ikei hit a lateral drop, tossing Fearnside to her back, where she finished off the pin quickly.
“When it’s there, it’s there,” said Ikei of her throw. “It was all or nothing.”
