Match of the Day: Anthony Echemendia doubles up and wins a Fargo Greco title
by USA Wrestling
One of the biggest stories of the 2019 USMC 16U and Junior Nationals was the emergence of Anthony Echemendia. A Cuban refugee who found his way to American, Echemendia came into the tournament as a virtual unknown and left as one of the biggest stars.
Days after winning the Junior freestyle bracket in decisive fashion, Echemendia entered the Greco-Roman tournament and laid waste to the competition. Over the course of seven matches, Echemendia outscored his opponents, 62-0, earning five technical falls and two pins. Shockingly, this was Echemendia’s first time wrestling Greco.
In the finals, Echemendia, who now attends Ohio State, squared off with Pennsylvania state champion Ed Scott. A North Carolina State commit, Scott won another PA state title this year.
