In 2019, Adeline Gray became the first U.S. wrestler to win five World Championships. The historic moment came a decade after Gray competed at her first Senior World Championships in Herning, Denmark in 2009, where she finished fifth.

In 2011, Gray earned her first Senior World medal at the World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey. At the time, Gray was a 2008 Junior World champion and was coming off of a silver-medal performance at the 2011 Junior World Championships.

In the opening round, Gray lost to Xiluo Zhuoma of China, who would end up taking gold. Gray battled back in repechage, first defeating three-time World champion and three-time World silver medalist Martine Dugrenier of Canada. For bronze, Gray squared off with Burcu Orskaya of Turkey.
