Blades wins gold, five other U.S. Cadet women make finals of Vorobyeva Cup in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - 2019 Cadet World Team member Kennedy Blades won all three of her matches to claim a gold medal at 69 kg on Saturday at the Vorobyeva Cup, an international Cadet women's tournament named in honor of Olympic champion Nataliya Vorobyeva of Russia. Blades is a member of the Wyoming Seminary girls wrestling team.
The U.S. team featured a mix of athletes from Wyoming Seminary, as well as many ov the top U.S. Cadet women from across the nation.
"Kennedy Blades was impressive, out scoring her opponents 30-0 to win gold. Her offensive attacks were solid, precise, and effective," said U.S. coach Erin Vandiver.
The other U.S. athletes who have reached the gold-medal finals are Virginia Foard of Virginia at 40 kg, Alex Szkotnicki of Maryland at 43 kg, Kylie Welker of Wisconsin at 61 kg, Reese Larramendy of Nevada at 65 kg and Tristan Kelly of Colorado at 73 kg.
Larramendy is a member of the Wyoming Seminary Team, while Welker is with the Elite Accelerator Progam (EAP) at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.
Three other U.S. wrestlers have a chance to compete for a bronze medal, either in a medal match or in repechage.
“The six finalists wrestled very aggressively. We are looking forward to tough matches tomorrow for those going for gold, bronze, and in still the repechage," said Vandiver.
There are several Russian teams entered in the tournament along with national teams from Estonia, Norway, and Finland.
Ceremonies, repechage, and medal matches will begin at 5:30am EST. Wrestling expected to start approx. 6:00am EST. The tournament will be live streamed from the “Wyoming Seminary Girls Wrestling” Facebook page.

“The action on the mat today was fantastic! All the USA girls went win willing to mix it up - and they did. I think the dual match last night helped get us in a better mind set and put us in stronger positions. The team is adapting very well to adversity. They are doing a great job of learning in all situations and showing adjustments from day to day," said Vandiver.
