Winchester reaches semifinals at World Championships; Hildebrandt and Francis still possible for repechage

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan –Jacarra Winchester (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/OTC) won two matches by technical fall to qualify for the semifinals at 55 kg/121 lbs. in women’s freestyle at the World Championships on Tuesday.
Winchester, who was a No. 3 seed, opened with a dominant 10-0 technical fall over 2013 World University bronze medalist Madina Nadirova of Kyrgyzstan. Nadirova tried to go upper body against Winchester, but it did not work, with Winchester getting a four-point throw, two other takedowns and a turn.
In the quarterfinals, Winchester was in control on the way to a 13-2 technical fall over Bolortuya Bat Ochir of Mongolia. Both wrestlers were fifth at the 2018 World Championships. Winchester went up by a 9-0 lead after scoring often in the first period, and finished it in the second period with another throw.
Winchester will battle 2016 University World champion Bediha Gun of Turkey in the semifinals, which begin at 4:45 p.m.
Two U.S. wrestlers reached the quarterfinals but were defeated, but still have a chance to get back into repechage, 2018 World silver medalist Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC/OPTC) at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. and Victoria Francis (Litchfield, Ill./Titan Mercury WC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Both had 1-1 records in the session.
Hildebrandt was defeated in the quarterfinals by two-time World champion Mayu Mukaida of Japan, in a 12-1 technical fall. Mukaida scored three takedowns and a turn, giving up one escape, to lead Hildebrandt at the break, 8-1. A takedown and a tilt by Mukaida ended it in the second period.
Seeded No. 1, Hildebrandt had little trouble in her opening match, securing a 10-0 technical fall over Thi Dao Bui of Vietnam in just 1:14. Hildebrandt scored a go-behind takedown, locked up an ankle lace and turned Bui four times to end the match quickly.
Mukaida will need to beat Maria Prevolaraki of Greece in the semifinals to pull Hildebrandt back into repechage. Hildebrandt is competing in her third Senior World Championships.
In the quarterfinals, Francis fell to 2013 World champion Alina Berezhna Stadnik Makhynia of Ukraine, 4-0. The only scoring move of the match was a first-period headlock by Makhinya. Francis fought out of a potential fall to get to the break, but was unable to get any scoring moves in the second period.
Francis opened strongly with a pin in 2:30 against 2019 Pan American champion Dejah Slater of Canada. Francis scored first on a stepout to lead 1-0. After getting a go-behind takedown, Francis drove Slater to her back, and eventually settled into a headlock position, securing the first-period fall.
Makhinya will need to defeat Paliha of China in order for Francis to be pulled back into repechage tomorrow.
Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) was eliminated at 50 kg/110 lbs. She was defeated in her first-round match by 2017 World bronze medalist Son-Hyang Kim of North Korea, 6-0. Kim scored two takedowns in the first period to lead 4-0 at the break, then added an additional second-period takedown for the win. Kim was able to hold off Conder’s offense.
In the next round, Kim was defeated by the No. 2 seed, 2013 World champion Yanan Sun of China, 5-2, which eliminated Conder, making her not eligible for repechage.
It was the second straight year that Conder drew Kim in a first-round bout at the World Championships. In 2017, Kim defeated Conder, 7-2, and failed to reach the finals, keeping Conder out of repechage.
Conder, a two-time Pan American Games champion, competed in her fifth Senior World Championships.
