Macey Kilty lands spot in fourth-straight World Championships finals
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Macey Kilty will make her fourth World Championships final appearance as she dominated in the 68 kg semifinals on Wednesday night at the 2019 U23 World Championships in Budapest Hungary.
Kilty breezed past the first day of competition, winning all three matches by technical fall. She outscored her opponents 31-0, thanks to her relentless attacks and skills in par terre.
In the semifinals, Kilty, a 2018 Cadet World champion and two-time Junior World silver medalist, controlled Yingying Wang of China en route to an 11-0 victory. The American used four takedowns and a tilt to propel her to another World final.
With the win, Kilty has guaranteed herself her fifth World medal in as many attempts. It also secured a bid to her second World Championships finals of the year as she was a Junior World runner-up earlier this summer.
For gold tomorrow, Kilty will take on Masako Furuichi of Japan, who is a three-time Junior World champion, three-time Cadet World champion and 2019 Senior World bronze medalist.
Two Americans, Emily Shilson and Dominique Parrish, were pulled into repechage action for Thursday.
2018 Cadet World champion and Youth Olympic Games champion Shilson lost her first-round match at 50 kg to three-time age-group World champion Kika Kagata of Japan. Kagata eventually advanced to the finals, giving Shilson another shot at a World medal.
In her first repechage match, Shilson will face 2015 Junior World champion Turkan Nasirova from Azerbaijan. Nasirova also has a 2018 U23 World bronze, a 2017 Junior World silver and two Cadet World medals.
Parrish was brought back into action when 2018 U23 World champion Saki Igarashi, who defeated Parrish in the quarterfinals, earned a spot in the 55 kg gold-medal match.
In her first repechage bout tomorrow, Parrish, a three-time U23 World Team member, will battle Andrea Ana of Romania, a 2018 U23 World bronze medalist and two-time Cadet World silver medalist. The winner will move onto the bronze-medal bout at 55 kg.
Abby Nette at 59 kg and Precious Bell at 76 kg were eliminated from the tournament as their quarterfinal victors failed to make it to the finals.
Action resumes on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. ET) with repechage. Medal matches will begin at 6 p.m. (noon ET) live on Trackwrestling.com. Follow @USAWrestling on Twitter for live updates.
