by Mike Willis, USA Wrestling
USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals, one of the nation’s premier preseason wrestling tournaments, will kick off tomorrow, Friday, October 25 and continue through Sunday, October 27. The event will be held in Des Moines, Iowa at Hyvee Hall inside the Iowa Events Center. The tournaments will feature over 3,078 wrestlers representing 40 different states.
While online registration is closed, walk-ins will be accepted until the high school and middle school divisions reach 1,500 wrestlers. The limit for the girls divisions is 500 wrestlers. The open division, which is new to the event, is capped at 400 wrestlers. Wrestlers will need a valid 2019-2020 USA Wrestling card with them at weigh-ins. The cost to register as a walk-in is $100.
This year, there will be 38 returning champions scattered throughout the brackets. The 11th and 12th grade boy’s bracket will feature the tournament’s 2018 Outstanding Wrestler award winner Maxx Mayfield at 152 pounds and Damen Pape back to defend his title at 182 pounds.
