Online registration has closed for the 2019 USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals, and the girls high school division is the largest and most talented field in the history of the event.
There are 126 entries in the girls high school division, representing 18 different states. The field could also grow, as there is an opportunity for more girls to enter as walkups, with a $100 entry fee.
At the close of preregistration, there are 20 nationally ranked athletes (from the National Girls High School Preseason Rankings) who are entered in Des Moines this weekend.
Included in this group are four No. 2 ranked stars: Faith Cole of Missouri, Nichole Moore of Kansas, Sara Sulejmani of Illinois and Tristan Kelly of Colorado.
Others who are ranked in the top 10 including Hannah Francis of Texas, Brittyn Corbishley of Texas, Amor Tuttle of Minnesota, Samara Chavez of Texas, Sydney Harper of Texas, Maddie Kubicki of Missouri and Alexis Janiak of Illinois.
In addition to the ranked athletes, there are at least 36 athletes entered who are on the national ranking watch list, who are under consideration for a national ranking.
What could make this event interesting is that the weight classes have not yet been determined, as the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals is using the “Madison System” to group the entries into weight classes. At this time, we do not know what nationally respected stars will end up in the same weight class, until they are determined onsite.
Success at major girls high school events, including the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals, are used to determine those athletes who receive a national ranking. For girls who are currently unranked, beating opponents who have a national ranking can help them move up into the top 20 ranking in their weight class.
The next National Girls High School Rankings will be published on December 4, and this event will be among the big preseason competitions included in those rankings.
Expect the level of competition in Des Moines this weekend to be outstanding. Girls who would like to compete against these top athletes who did not pre-register may show up on site and join the tournament onsite by paying the $100 late entry fee.
This event is broadcast live on TrackWrestling. TheMat.com will have complete coverage of the tournament each day of action.
