Conder wins silver medal at CISM Military World Games in China

WUHAN, China – SSG Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a silver medal at 50 kg/105.5 lbs. in women’s freestyle on the second day of the wrestling action at the 7th CISM Military World Games on Tuesday. The CISM Military World Games is a multi-sport event featuring the world’s top military athletes.
Conder won two matches with dominance to reach the finals. She opened with a 9-2 victory over 2019 European bronze medalist Kseniya Stankevich of Belarus, then scored an 11-0 technical fall in the semifinals over 2015 African Cadet champion Nada Ashour of Egypt.
In the gold-medal finals, Conder was beaten by Li Yuan of China, 6-5. Yuan was a 2018 CISM Military Wrestling World Championships champion, and fifth in the 2014 Asian Championships.
This is Conder’s first CISM Military World Games medal, but she also boasts a 2014 CISM Military World Wrestling Championships silver medal. A two-time Pan American Games champion, Conder has competed on five U.S. Senior World Teams.
Conder won the second CISM Military World Games medal for the USA, as SSG Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a bronze medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on Monday.
Three other U.S. entries on Tuesday were defeated in their first match and did not qualify for repechage when their opponent failed to reach the finals.
At 53 kg, PFC Areana Villaescusa (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) placed seventh, after a 12-6 loss to 2018 U23 World silver medalist Milana Dadasheva of Russia, 12-6.
In men’s freestyle, at 125 kg, SPC Jacob Mitchell (U.S. Army WCAP) finished in ninth place, after falling to 2018 World silver medalist Deng Zhiwei of China, 7-1.
Also competing in men’s freestyle was SGT Lucas Sheridan (U.S. Army WCAP), who was defeated by 2019 All-Africa Games bronze medalist Mohammed Fardj of Algeria, 5-1.
Four U.S. athletes will compete on Wednesday. Their draws are not yet posted on the official website. In women’s freestyle, PFC Nahiela Magee (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) will compete at 68 kg and SPC Randi Beltz (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) is entered at 76 kg.
The Greco-Roman competition launches with two entries, SGT Ildar Hafizov (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 60 kg and SGT Ellis Coleman (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) 67 kg. Both are past Olympians and World Team members.
