Nowry wins freestyle bronze medal at CISM Military World Games in China

WUHAN, China - SSG Max Nowry (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) won a bronze medal at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. in men’s freestyle on the first day of the wrestling action at the 7th CISM Military World Games on Monday.
Nowry opened his tournament with an 11-0 technical fall over 2019 African freestyle champion Abdelhak Kherbache of Algeria in the quarterfinals. In his semifinal, he was defeated by 2017 European freestyle silver medalist Andrei Dukov of Romania, in a 10-0 technical fall. Nowry won his bronze medal match over Subiri Mwazembe of Tanzania by forfeit.
Nowry was fifth in the 2019 Senior World Championships in Greco-Roman at 55 kg/121 lbs. Nowry qualified to compete at the CISM Military World Games by winning the 2019 Armed Forces Championships in freestyle in February. He was a 2012 University World champion in Greco-Roman.
The CISM Military World Games is a multi-sport event featuring military athletes from across the globe. The wrestling competition at this event is traditionally very strong, with many past World and Olympic medalists.
The other U.S. athlete competing on Monday was 1st Lt. Jamel Johnson (Camp Lejeune, N.C./U.S. Marine Corps), who went 0-1 in men’s freestyle at 65 kg/143 lbs. Johnson lost his opening match to Krzysztof Bienkowski of Poland, 6-2. Bienkowski is a five-time German freestyle World Team member. When Bienkowski did not reach the finals, Johnson was not eligible for repechage. Johnson finished 13th in the final standings.
There were four men’s freestyle weight classes contested on Monday, but the USA had entries in two of the weight classes. Russia dominated by winning three of the four gold medals. Among their champions were 2019 Senior World champion Gadzhimurad Rashidov at 65 kg, 2014 Senior World champion Khetik Tsabolov at 74 kg and 2019 Senior World bronze medalist Artur Naifonov at 86 kg. The other individual champion was Pak Un Gwang of North Korea at 57 kg.
Two more U.S. men’s freestyle entries will compete on Tuesday, SGT Lucas Sheridan (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) and SPC Jacob Mitchell (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP). The women’s freestyle competition also starts on Tuesday, and the U.S. has two entries, SSG Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 50 kg and PFC Areana Villaescusa (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) at 53 kg. Conder is a five-time Senior World Team member for the USA and a 2007 Junior World champion.
