TBILISI, Georgia – Steve Horton of Cibolo, Texas, won a silver medal at 70 kg in Div. D, the top performance among U.S. men’s freestyle athletes at the Veterans World Championships on Saturday.
In the gold-medal finals, Horton was edged on a last-second throw by Hamidreza Rabiei Kenari of Iran, 6-4.
Rabiei Kenari on the shot clock, but he secured a leg attack takedown to lead 2-0. Horton responded at the end of the first period with a takedown and a quick gut wrench to lead 4-2 at the break. There was no second-period scoring until the final few seconds of the match, when Rabiei nailed a four-point lateral drop to win the match.
Horton won three straight bouts to qualify for the finals, opening with a 10-0 technical fall over Massimo Aresti of Italy. In the quarterfinals, he won a tight 4-2 battle with Rovshan Guliyev of Azerbaijan. In the semifinals, he secured a 10-0 technical fall over Niyamudin Murtazaev of Russia.
Last year, Horton won two Veterans World medals, a silver in Greco-Roman and a bronze in freestyle.
Claiming bronze medals for the USA on Saturday in freestyle were Joseph Raia of South Elgin, Ill. at 62 kg in Div. D, Jeff Anderson of Zeeland, Mich. at 88 kg in Div. D, Matthew Nowak of Johannesburg, Mich. at 130 kg in Div. D and George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. at 130 kg in Div. C
Raia, Nowak and Porter won their second medals of the 2019 Veterans Worlds after also reaching the podium in Greco-Roman on Wednesday.
Raia scored a 7-5 victory in his bronze-medal match over Tsogtsaikhan Myagmar of Mongolia, leading the bout most of the way. He was up 5-1, when Myagmar scored a late four-point throw, which Raia got a reversal for two and finished off the victory. Raia lost to Winfried Hoeflich of Germany in the opening match, 8-1, the same athlete who beat Raia in the Veterans Greco-Roman finals on Wednesday. Raia leaves Tbilisi with a Greco-Roman World silver medal and a freestyle World bronze medal.
Anderson finished his day with a 3-1 record with three pins, capped off by a first-period pin of Petr Struchkov of Russia in the bronze-medal bout. Anderson tossed Struchkov to his back and quickly secured the fall in 34 seconds to win his medal. He opened with a pair of pins, stopping Tsandeleg Jadamba of Mongolia in 57 seconds and Lev Afanasev of Russia in 1:27. His only loss came to Radislav Navazhap of Russia.
Nowak lost his first match in his pool competition to Ardeshir Poorhekmat of Iran by technical fall, but won his second bout, a pin of Ali Temirkaev of Russia in 1:18. This secured him a spot in the semifinals, where he lost to Bumbayar Damiran of Mongolia, 14-9. This placed him in a bronze-medal bout, in a rematch with Poorhekmat, where Nowak powered him onto his back and secured a stunning 46-second first-period pin to claim his spot on the podium. Nowak heads home to the USA with two Veterans World bronze medals, one in each style.
Porter opened with a tight 2-1 decision over Vahid Rahnama of Iran. In the semifinals, he was edged by Bayanmunkh Shura of Mongolia, 2-1. He received a forfeit win in the bronze-medal match over Thomas Summ of Germany. Porter can add his Veterans World freestyle bronze to the World silver medal he won in Greco-Roman on Thursday. He is a two-time Veterans World freestyle champion.
With the five medals won in men’s freestyle on Saturday, the medal haul for the USA is now up to 18 medals. The USA is now up to 11 men’s freestyle medals, after taking six on Friday. The USA added seven medals in Greco-Roman over the first three days of that event.
The USA concludes the 2019 Veterans Worlds with six men’s freestyle athletes in Div. A, who hit the mats on Sunday. Included in this group is James Medeiros of Van Nuys, Calif., who won a Veterans World bronze medal in Greco-Roman on Thursday at 88 kg, and Jordin Humphrey of Monrovia, Calif. at 70 kg, a 2018 Veterans World bronze medalist in Div.
