TBILISI, Georgia – Gary Cook of Syracuse, N.Y placed fifth at 62 kg in Div. B in Greco-Roman, the top U.S. performance on the first day of competition at the Veterans World Championships on Tuesday.

Cook opened his tournament with a quarterfinal win over Svetoslav Georgiev Dmitrov of Bulgaria, 6-3. In the semifinals, Cook was pinned by Aleksandr Serebrinnikov of Russia, who went on to win the gold medal. In his bronze-medal match, Cook was pinned by Zhanbolat Abitov of Kazakhstan.

Competition on Tuesday was in Greco-Roman in Div. B and Div. E.

The other U.S. wrestlers who entered on Tuesday were defeated, and none were able to qualify for the repechage rounds. None of their opponents who beat them reached the finals, which is required to pull an athlete back into repechage.

Winning his opening match was Jeffrey Mallett of Lanham, Md., who beat Biyouk Sadeghi Shoreh Deli of Germany, 3-2 in the opening round at 62 kg in Division E. Mallett was defeated by Hosseinali Abdolhossein Azadi of Iran in his next match. Azadi did not advance to the gold-medal finals, knocking Mallett out of the tournament.

Draws for day two of Greco-Roman have been done, which features athletes in Div. C and Div. D. There are 12 athletes from the United States scheduled to compete Wednesday in Greco-Roman, and their pairings are listed below.

Among the USA wrestlers competing in Greco-Roman on Wednesday are two-time Veterans World freestyle champion, George Porter of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who will wrestle at 130 kg in Div. C, and Steven Horton of Cibolo of Texas, a Veterans World medalist in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in 2018, who will compete in Div. D at 70 kg.

Veterans athletes are 35 years old through 60 years old, and compete in five different age groups.

The event will be broadcast live in the United States on Trackwrestling. Tbilisi is eight hours ahead of the U.S. Eastern time zone.
