Shai reaches bronze-medal bout at Olympic Test Event in Japan; Glaude takes fifth place

TOKYO, Japan – 2008 University World champion Katherine Shai (Denver, Colo./Titan Mercury WC/Northern Colorado WC) has qualified for a bronze-medal bout at 53 kg/116.5 lbs. based upon her performance at the Ready Steady Tokyo Olympic Wrestling Test Event on Friday.
Shai will battle 2017 Asian Cadet champion Ibuki Tamura of Japan in the bronze-medal round on Saturday.
Shai opened up with a dominant 11-2 victory over two-time Junior World medalist Liliya Horishna of Ukraine in her pigtail match. In the quarterfinals, she was defeated by 2018 Junior World champion Umi Imai of Japan, 10-2. When Imai qualified for the gold-medal match, Shai was pulled back into the bronze-medal round.
The other U.S. athlete who began competition on Friday, two-time Senior World Team member and two-time Junior World champion Victoria Anthony (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids WC) was defeated in her only match at 50 kg/110 lbs., losing to 2017 Cadet World champion Remina Yoshimoto of Japan, 4-3. When Yoshimoto failed to reach the finals, Anthony was not eligible for repechage.
The first group of wrestlers completed their competition on Friday. The only U.S. athlete from Group 1 who reached the medal rounds was 2018 U23 World bronze medalist Alex Glaude (West Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), who placed fifth at 68 kg/149.5 lbs.
Glaude was edged in her bronze-medal bout by 2018 Junior World bronze medalist Alina Rudnytska Levytska of Ukraine, 4-3.
On Thursday, Glaude opened with a forfeit win over two-time World medalist Feng Zhou of China in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she was pinned by 2019 World bronze medalist Xiaoqian Wang of China.
China won two of the three gold medals determined in the Group 1 finals on Friday.

Group 2 repechage is scheduled for Saturday morning in Tokyo at 11:30 a.m., with the medal rounds set for 11:20 a.m. local time. Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern time zone.
